Although both 301 and 304 stainless steel plates use iron as the primary component, the two alloys have several key differences in chemical composition. As shown in the above table, many compounds in the two steel alloys have the same sealing value. However, Grade 304 stainless steel obtains more chromium and nickel than Grade 301. This often makes grade 304 stainless steel plate more expensive than grade 301.

Most stainless steel alloys have excellent or excellent corrosion resistance under normal conditions. Stainless steel alloys tend to have a solid and thin oxide layer to avoid rusting, so they are called stainless steel.

The corrosion resistance of grade 301 and 304 stainless steel is not significantly different under mild corrosion environment at normal ambient temperature. Generally speaking, the corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel plate of Grade 301 is slightly poor, because Alloy 301 has lower chromium content and higher carbon content.

At higher temperatures, the difference in corrosion resistance is more obvious.

For example, if a piece of 301 stainless steel is to be welded or cut by laser, the corrosion trace in the heat-affected zone will be corroded more easily than 304 alloy treated by the same method. This is due to the deposition of chromium carbide, which depletes the chromium in the heat-affected area.

Another key difference between the two types of stainless steel is that the pressure of each type of stainless steel is acceptable before mechanical failure occurs.

Grade 301 stainless steel with higher carbon content (0.15% compared with 0.08 component% of 304) can better accept mechanical force. At room temperature, Grade 301 stainless steel may require up to 120 ksi (kilopounds per square inch).

304 stainless steel plate can only accept 90ksi pressure before experiencing mechanical failure. This means that at room temperature, the basket made of Grade 301 stainless steel has 33% higher stress than the similar basket made of Grade 304 alloy.
